History
The Capilano suspension bridge is one of the oldest tourist attractions in Vancouver. It was constructed in the nineteenth century and is now part of the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. When the original Capilano Suspension Bridge was built in 1889, it was made out of hemp ropes. It was pulled across the Capilano River by horses. Mackay purchased 6,000 acres of forest on either side of the river. He also hired two Coast Salish natives to help him build the bridge.
Mackay bought a small cabin on the edge of the canyon wall and began preparing his land for the new bridge. After the construction was complete, Mackay opened the new attraction to the public. In fact, he dubbed it the “Eighth Wonder of the World”.
By the late 1800s, Mackay was a successful land developer, real estate investor, and park commissioner for Vancouver. His summer home on the north shore of the Capilano River became a favorite vacation spot for adventurous locals.
Treetops Adventure

Shuttle service
If you want to take a tour of the Capilano Suspension Bridge, you can use a free shuttle service from the Canada Place, Hyatt Regency, and Blue Horizon hotels. During off-seasons, the shuttle runs every 30 minutes. This allows you to make a quick trip to the park.
The park features a history walk, a nature park, and an all-encompassing BC experience. It is open daily except on Christmas Day. Capilano Suspension Bridge and Park is an easy drive from Vancouver, and it is located right across the Lions Gate Bridge. There is a shuttle bus that will bring you to the park, but you can also get there on foot.
